What makes Swedish lollies different

Bubs is the brand behind the skulls and ovals that took Swedish candy worldwide. The run started with a TikTok about a Swedish sweet shop in New York in January 2024, demand outran the factory inside the year, and TIME named Bubs one of its Best Inventions of 2025 for the foamy texture. Orkla, which has owned Bubs since 2023, agreed in July 2026 to buy a European confectionery manufacturer for €207 million to lift Bubs production for export markets.

Four Bubs sweets reach Australia and they cover both of the shapes. Sour skulls and raspberry and liquorice skulls are the jelly ones. Banana toffee and strawberry vanilla ovals are the foam. Bubs sold in the United States is made there with a Texas manufacturer. What we send is made in Sweden.

Lördagsgodis, or Saturday sweets

Lördagsgodis is the weekly pick-and-mix ritual the whole thing was built on, and godis is simply the Swedish word for lollies. The Observer put the scale of it plainly in November 2024.

Families chew through more than 1kg of sticky treats in an evening.

Foam, jelly, sour and salmiak

Sweden buys its lollies loose, and a wall of lösgodis with bins, tongs and a price by weight is why the range runs wide on texture rather than deep on one idea.

  • Foam springs back as you bite and the flavour lands straight away. Ahlgrens Bilar are the classic foam cars, while the Bubs ovals and both foamy monkeys take their lift from potato protein instead.

  • Jelly is denser and chews longer, with the flavour arriving in stages. Both Bubs skulls and Zoo Original.

  • Sour is the sharp end. Colanappar are cola-flavoured wine gum dummies under a sour sugar coating, and Supersur and S-märke push it further.

  • Salmiak, or salty liquorice, is the flavour Sweden is best known for, and Djungelvrål is where it starts.

Not everything on a Swedish sweet wall is Swedish

Two Nordic neighbours have earned a place on it. Finnish Fazer makes Tyrkisk Peber and Tutti Frutti, and Danish Toms makes the Ferrari raspberry cars. The rest of what we send is Swedish, made by the companies whose names are on the front of the bag.

Salty liquorice and where to start

Salty liquorice is liquorice flavoured with salmiak, or ammonium chloride, and it is the flavour Sweden is best known for. The salt is nothing like the salt on a packet of chips. It reads as astringent and mineral, closest to the drying grip of tannin in red wine, and it arrives a beat before the liquorice does.

Work up the scale.

  • Ferrari Salt Hallon is the gentlest way in. Danish, and salmiak on a sweet raspberry wine gum with no liquorice in it at all, so the salt lands on a flavour you already know.

  • Ahlgrens Bilar Saltlakrits runs the salty liquorice through the body of the car rather than sitting it on top.

  • Djungelvrål is the Swedish classic, four animals in a bag.

  • Lakrisal is the concentrate, a pressed pastille of sugar, liquorice and salmiak with no starch or gum arabic, so it dissolves rather than chews.

Tyrkisk Peber Hot & Sour belongs here too. The bite is salmiak rather than chilli, with fruit acidity over the top, and there are four kinds in the bag. Try the lot at once with the Nordic Super Salty mix pack.

Vegan, gelatine free and what is in the bag

Bubs states that 100% of its range is vegan and free of gelatine and other animal ingredients, which covers all four Bubs sweets we send to Australia. TIME’s Best Inventions 2025 entry describes them the same way, as foamy vegan gummies. The foam in the banana toffee and strawberry vanilla ovals is built on potato protein, which is named in the ingredient list.

Contains gelatine. All three Ahlgrens Bilar, both Ferraris, S-märke, Supersur, Zoo Original, Fruxo, PimPim and Fizzypop. Carmine, which is insect-derived, colours all of those apart from Saltlakrits and Fizzypop.

Wheat.Gott & Blandat Original contains wheat flour, and Tutti Frutti and Colanappar both contain wheat starch.

Halal. We have no halal certification to pass on, so we do not claim it. Gelatine and carmine are the practical question, and every product carries its full ingredient panel.

Swedish candy went viral internationally in 2024, after a TikTok about a Swedish sweet shop in New York introduced pick-and-mix to a much wider audience. Bubs became the face of it, demand outran Swedish production that year, and TIME named Bubs one of its Best Inventions of 2025. Orkla was still adding Bubs capacity for export markets in July 2026.

Swedish candy is built around the pick-and-mix wall, where every sweet has to be worth choosing on its own against forty others. That pressure produced the sour coatings, the potato-protein foam and the salty liquorice Sweden is known for.

Salty liquorice is liquorice flavoured with salmiak, or ammonium chloride. It is astringent and mineral rather than salty like chips, and it arrives before the liquorice does. Ferrari Salt Hallon is the gentlest way in.

We have no halal certification to pass on for any of the Swedish candy we ship, so we do not claim it. Gelatine and carmine are the practical question, and both are listed product by product with a full ingredient panel on every product.
